German False Friend Chef Means Boss Not Cook

In English, a chef is a professional cook. In German, "der Chef" (or "die Chefin") means the boss, manager, or head of an organization. "Mein Chef ist sehr streng" = My boss is very strict. The German word for a cook is "der Koch" (male) or "die Köchin" (female). Calling someone "Chef" in a German office means calling them your boss — a useful compliment actually!

Don't compliment the "Chef" at a German restaurant expecting to meet the cook! 😂 In German: Chef = BOSS/MANAGER. The person cooking = "der Koch" or "die Köchin". False friends can cause very awkward situations! #CrackGerman
